DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Excel was originally called Multiplan? The spreadsheet program by Microsoft was released for Macintosh computers and was successful against VisiCalc, which was the first ever spreadsheet program. However, even though over a million copies of Multiplan was sold, it lost against another competitor, Lotus 1-2-3. Lotus 1-2-3- was a program by IBM, and it was the main trigger for IBM’s success in the 1980s. In 1985, Microsoft rose up to the challenge and upgraded and rebranded Multiplan into Excel, because it “excelled” over Lotus 1-2-3. Software development for Excel 1.0 was done by a team of only four people, including the lead developer Douglas Klunder.
Along with Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel has been part and parcel of Microsoft Office since the first version of the suite was released in 1990. By 1996, Excel had 30 million users. At present, Excel has 750 million active users worldwide, making it the most used Microsoft application after Word and PowerPoint. Microsoft Excel is used the most by business enterprises, as it is this sector that needs Excel’s number crunching capabilities the most. The latest version of Excel, Excel 16.0, has over 400 executable commands and functions in 11 categories. This, and the fact that Excel is now available for mobile platforms, is a big advantage over its other competitors such as Numbers by Apple and Google Sheets.
