WHAT'S THE MEANING

4X games are video games where players are required to control units and build and defend infrastructures to explore a map, expand territories, exploit resources, and exterminate opponents. These games are subdivided into two genres, turn-based games like Civilization, or real-time games like Age of Empires.

DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that it was Simtex's game, Master of Orion, that redefined the genre of 4X games? Master of Orion was a futuristic science-fiction, and space-themed, turn-based game developed by Simtex and released by MicroProse in 1993. It required players to control their units and manage resources to dominate a map by colonizing planets. It only followed similar games like Civilization and Reach for the Stars, but it was only after Master of Orion's arrival that the term 4X was coined and used, when the magazine Computer Gaming World wrote it to describe the game in a preview. The magazine then awarded the game the Strategy Game of the Year award in 1994 and called it Civilization, but in space. In 2003, IGN named the game as the 98th best game of all time, while GameSpy inducted the game into its Hall of Fame and GameSpot included it in the list of greatest games of all time.
