did you know
Did you know that in the United States, 54% of people aged 18 to 29 watch TV shows through online streaming rather than through traditional TV in 2017? Online streaming is on the rise, and Cisco forecasts that by 2019, online video will account for 70% of mobile traffic. The rise of on-demand streaming platforms can be linked to its accessibility. With platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, users can watch what they want, where they want, when they want. Limelight Network reported in 2017 that the global average for online video watching went up to 5 hours and 45 minutes, a 34% increase in less than one year. However, this does not mean that traditional TV is completely dead: younger generations are migrating to other means of watching content, but people aged 50 and above still get over 40 hours of traditional TV per week. The continuous growth and popularity of digital content, social media, streaming platforms, and advancements in mobile technology will all eventually lead to the demise of traditional TV, but that time is not now. One of the biggest threats that online video streaming is facing today is piracy, with illegal streaming platforms and download sites becoming as mainstream as the legal ones. In a 2014 survey, 14% of the respondents admitted to streaming unlicensed content. The same survey revealed people’s ambivalence, with 35% of respondents stating that they neither agree or disagree about the illegality of streaming unlicensed content.
