WHAT’S THE MEANING

An avatar, in digital terms, is a graphical version or representation of the user. In short, an avatar is a user’s character. An avatar is mostly used as an icon or photo in online forums, communities, or in some cases, video games.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the term avatar originated from the religion and dharma of Hinduism? Avatar stands for the descent of a deity onto the earth, thereby manifesting themselves into terrestrial forms. The term was first used in an application called Avatar, which is a role-playing game for the PLATO operating system, released in 1979. Despite that, it’s first usage as an on-screen representation of the user was way back in 1985 in another computer game named Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, wherein creator Richard Garriott desired the player’s character be the game version of themselves.

Although the term was initially used for a player’s in-game character, it soon became used exclusively within online forums and chat applications as a visual representation of the users in place of photos of their real faces. Presently, avatars are more often than not a necessity when joining an online group, be it a group chat or an online forum. Additionally, supporting avatar applications like Bitmoji have increased in population throughout the years and have become available for use in various chat applications, further reinforcing the fact that social avatars are here to stay.
