WHAT’S THE MEANING?
Graphics Interchange Format (widely known as GIF) is a bitmap image format developed by the American computer scientist Steve Wilhite in June 1987. These files are easily identified by the file extension name ‘.gif’ attached to the file name. It features solid color, text, and simple shapes. Long before the emergence of animated GIFs, the traditional ones were commonly used for buttons, icons, and banners, for they do not have a complex design.
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that GIF became the biggest digital marketing trend in 2017? Yes, you read that right. This simple kind of bitmap image has found its way in the marketing industry in the previous year by offering more than just an entertainment value. Some of the big names in the business industry are now utilizing gifs in their social media strategy because according to Reuters, 2018 will be the year of visual communication. And this is backed up by sources that say people retain 65% of information if it is paired with a relevant image.
However, inasmuch as it is making a hit in the market, it still has some drawbacks. One of which is its resolution. Since gifs are bitmap images, they are resolution dependent—it means when they are resized, there is a very high chance that their resolution or quality would decrease.
