DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that Mediterranean diet is officially recognized by UNESCO as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of Mediterranean countries Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Greece, Cyprus, and Croatia? In 2013 UNESCO declared that the diet is a product of skills, knowledge, and rituals, about the preparation, cooking, and sharing of food. Diet from this region is not only symbolic but is also widely regarded for its health benefits. In 2008, a meta-analysis made by four researchers showed the diet decreased the chance of dying from cancer up to 6%. In 2013 a study made by the non-profit organization Cochrane found out that it lowers cardiovascular risk factors because it is rich in healthy food like olive oil, fish, and vegetables (which are food low in saturated fat) and is usually low on meats and sweets.

The next year, two meta-analyses made by different groups of researchers showed Mediterranean diet has a close association with the decrease of risk of having Type-2 diabetes and another study stated regular consumption of olive oil decreases the risk of developing cancer. Mediterranean cuisine, like other similar diet plans, encourages high consumption of fruits, vegetables, wine, and fish, which are all abundant in the coasts of the region, while it does not have many types of meals based on pork and beef and has few desserts.
