    WHAT'S THE MEANING

Open world games are forms of video games where a player or a group of players can explore a virtual world without running into invisible walls like in linear games. These open world games have boundaries but are often displayed as unsurpassable forms of land or water.

     DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that Rockstar North and Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto is credited with getting the general gaming audience hooked on the open world video game genre? In October 1997, Rockstar Games released the first of many versions of Grand Theft Auto and quickly became a commercial success, recording more than one million copies sold in less than a year. The first game had a big impact on British culture that it was voted among the top 10 in the Great British Design Quest in 2006, along with the World Wide Web and the game Tomb Raider. Rockstar Games continued the series and even produced spin-offs, like GTA: London 1969, GTA 2, GTA: Vice City, and almost all were huge commercial successes. Vice City sold 20 million copies but was overshadowed by GTA: San Andreas in 2004, when it sold 27.5 million copies. All in all, the series had 16 titles, and the latest, GTA V, was the most successful yet, selling 90 million copies since its release in 2013.
