WHAT’S THE MEANING
Chiromancy, more commonly known as palmistry or palm reading, is the method of predicting a person’s future and evaluating his character by studying the palm on his dominant hand. It comes from the Greek word “kheir,” which means hand.
DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that a palm reader doesn’t only read the lines on a person’s palm, but also other features such as the mounts, fingerprints, hand shape, finger length, skin texture, and many others? Practices for palmistry as a method for divination varies from culture to culture, but classical palmistry originated from Greek mythology. In classical palmistry, each area of the palm is related to a Greek god or goddess. Palmistry was considered to be one of the seven forbidden arts of Renaissance magic, along with necromancy, geomancy, hydromancy, aeromancy, pyromancy, and scapulimancy. Several famous palm readers have tried to establish palmistry as a science, with Cheiro being a notable example. Cheiro, born William John Warner, was famous for his accurate evaluations of his famous clients, such as Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, and Oscar Wilde. Recent medical studies have stated that there might really be correlations between features of the hand and a person’s future wellbeing. This is because the hand contains a lot of clues about a person’s early development. One example would be a study that hypothesized that men with mismatched hands are more prone to becoming depressed.
