DID YOU KNOW
Dragon Ball Super is uncommon in that, instead of the usual direction for adaptations, it is the anime series that inspired the manga. Initially released in 2015, Dragon Ball Super was created as the sequel to the anime series Dragon Ball Z. In turn, Dragon Ball Z is the continuation of the original anime series, Dragon Ball. Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise, outlined the plot of the latest anime series, but his contribution stops there. The individual episodes were fleshed out by various screenwriters. Compared to the success of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, with a five season-run and a total of 131 episodes, was criticized for having bad animation. Despite that, ratings for the show are still high, garnering 8.1 stars on IMDb and a score of 7.77 on MyAnimeList. Meanwhile, the manga adaptation of Dragon Ball Super is illustrated by Toyotarou, Toriyama’s chosen successor. According to Toriyama, the manga is an accurate depiction of how he wanted the story of Dragon Ball Super to go. This is in comparison to the anime series, where he always asks the animators to change something. He adds that he believes that the animators should use the manga as a reference, which is impossible because the anime’s production was ahead of that of the manga’s.
