DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Latha R Prasad of Kerala, India currently holds the Guinness World Record for spelling 50 words backward in record time? Last January 8, 2017, Prasad made her third attempt to set the record for spelling 50 words backward and she managed to spell it in only 1 minute and 7.53 seconds. Looking back at the history of English spelling, the language brought to Britain by the Anglo-Saxons (invaders from North Germany) in the 5th century has grown from three different phases: Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. However, there were many changes in each phase. And for centuries, there has been a movement to reform the spelling of English. It seeks to change English spelling so that it is more consistent, matches the pronunciation better, and follows the alphabetic principle. Common motives for spelling reform involve a cheap and quick way so that the English language would be more useful for international communication.
Today, hundreds and even millions of people speak English all over the world. Whether it is their first language or second language, or just one of the foreign languages that they speak and learn at school. Rapidly moving technology has also played a major role. Applications intended for learning English spelling, grammar, and dictionaries are now made available for our smartphones.
