"I love to play the video games and this one is about war so there is much action to be had. The name of it is the Total War: Arena and it is soo good! You can even play it for free, online with other people that are also online. It is a war simulation game and boy is it a fun one, you should play too!"

"I found this game both exciting and frustrating. I love survival horror games. They immediately grab me and I definitely feel the high stakes emotions of the situation. I felt there was some content and information missing in this game though. Would still recommend."

"Nothing comes to mind better than The Forest for an open world horror game to try out. With an overall rating of 91%, this game does not disappoint and offers plenty of hours of fun."

"As a huge gamer, my favorite genre of games are survival games which is why I decided to download Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead. I was hoping that this horror and survival game would pack all the punches that I look for in a game but sadly it failed to do so. The only reason I would recommend this game to anyone is because it is free, that is all it has going for it. Take my advice and just spend a few dollars and get something great!"

    WHAT'S THE MEANING?

Open world games are forms of video games where a player or a group of players can explore a virtual world without running into invisible walls like in linear games. These open world games have boundaries but are often displayed as unsurpassable forms of land or water.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that Resident Evil, the 1996 game that streamlined the survival horror genre, was heavily influenced by the themes and gameplay of the 1992 PC game, Alone in the Dark? In 1992, French gaming company Infogrames released Alone in the Dark, an action horror game for MS-DOS. The game was set in the 1920s and the character is in a mansion in Louisiana, and the player must guide the character out of the dark and haunted mansion by slaying ghosts and monsters. Players can choose between Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood as their character, who wakes up in the attic of the mansion and must find the way out, all the while battling slave zombies and giant bipedal rat monsters. Players can look for weapons to help in battle, but some monsters can be defeated with fists. The game was met with positive reception, with gaming magazine AllGame giving it 3.5 stars out of 5, while EGM scored it 8/10. Famitsu gave it 33/40 in their review and Next Generation rated it with 4 stars out of 5. It won three awards in the 1993 European Computer Trade SHow: Best Graphics, Most Original Game, and BEst French Game of the Year.

"I really liked the graphics of Don't Starve. Although everybody compares them to Tim Burton movies, they reminded me more of Edward Gorey. Basically, you're in a world where lots of normally cute things, like bunnies, are trying to kill you, and you have to kill them first in order to get anything to eat. The developers are constantly adding new parts of the world and new things for you to fight, so you'll never get bored - more likely just exhausted."

"I'm a fan of Project Zomboid's base building zombie gameplay. Its gameplay rhythms are a lot subtler than other open world base building horrors, you, the zombies, your hunger and your needs all move a lot slower than, say, Minecraft. It's a lot more gritty than a lot of games in the genre."

"This is not a great hit for me. I definitely think it meets the criteria as a survival game with a horror element. However, it is not a single player game. I would have to team up with other survivors in order to play, and while I might be interested in checking it out, I definitely wouldn't categorize it as "single player.""

"Video games - what would we do without them? Gotta love survival games that are open world base building horror single players for PC, and State of Decay: YOSE is in my top five favorites these days. The graphics are awesome, and the zombies/infected just look amazing. Very realistic! Get your game on with this one on Steam, and make sure to set aside lots of hours because you won't be able to pull yourself away."

"Grave VR was a little scary and really interesting to me. It's really tactical and incredibly atmospheric in ways; the advanced light engine enables a lot of worrying and incredibly anxious moments; light is both your weapon and in incredibly short supply."

"Very technical in ways, one of my favorite survival games for that reason. I like the way the game forces you to learn programming and serious tactical play for the sake of play, in that way it's a lot slower and more methodical than others in the genre. You learn piece by piece and slowly, grinding out vital knowledge over time."

"10 Years Later would seem to be a good survival game concept--if the actually finished it. Very buggy, little support, and there seem to be no updates for it any longer. Not even worth looking at."

"DayZ is a gritty, authentic, open-world survival horror hybrid-MMO game, in which players follow a single goal: to survive in the harsh post-apocalyptic landscape as long as they can. Players can experience powerful events and emotions arising from the ever-evolving emergent gameplay. There are no superficial tips, waypoints, built in tutorials or help given to players. Every decision matters, there are no save games, no extra lives, every mistake can be lethal. If you fail, you lose everything and you need to play again from the beginning with nothing but your wits, and your two hands. Fight the hostile environment, where every other player can be friend or foe and nothing can be taken for granted."

"It’s an okay solution. The game looks like more of story based survival horror game, which fits that part of the criteria well, but it doesn’t look open world. It looks like you have to follow a set destination to go through the game like in a story. Other than that, it looks like a solid recommendation for a horror survival game. I don’t have any experience with it, but the overall ratings look appealing and would be a decent solution for this problem."

"Needing a game that's a single player open world horror survival with base building. I started searching on Steam hoping I would find a game that meets my needs. I did up finding "How to Survive 2", and it is great! It was exactly what I was looking for. This game has so much to do and it's very fun doing it. This is shaping up to be one of my favorite games of all time!"

"This hits on two of the three elements of my request. It is a survival game and single player. However, I would not call it a horror game. Nuclear disaster may be horrible to most people, but this game seems to be more about rebuilding once the main horror is over."

"Try Fallout 3. It's got an open world game with horror elements and it has a lot of creative elements. The combat system is in real time. It's a good RPG game for people who play 1P."

"Minecraft is a very popular open world base building game but the is lacking in the horror element. If you play on survival mode you might argue that it has a horror element to it, but it certainly isn't in the genre of Minecraft."

"This game was fun to play, and the world full of zombies felt as realistic as that situation could. The only downside for me was that I am scared too easily to play a game like this without having all the lights on. Of all the zombie related things in the media - movies, tv shows, games - that have come out lately, this is a a good addition."

"I was on my PC looking for a survival game that had some horror elements and came across UnReal World. This game is not the most graphically pleasing game, but the elements it adds with real world survival scenarios are super cool and really fun and exciting. I loved this game and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for suspense and excitement!"
