DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that turn-based strategy games are based on Sid Meier's groundbreaking innovation, Civilization? Meier's iconic game was released in 1991 as a pioneer in the 4x and turn-based strategy genre, becoming the basis of many similar games till today. Meier received numerous awards and attribution for his creation of the god game, which was given the Best Military or Strategy Computer Game of 1001 and the Best Game of All Time recognition by Computer Gaming World in 1996. It was also included in New York Times' Game Canon list of 2007, which include nine other games that NYT's readers deemed as the most influential games in the world of gaming. Many of today's turn-based strategy games are similar to Civilization in terms of the science fiction theme like 2K Games' alien-invasion themed XCOM 2, Hammerfall Publishing's intergalactic-themed Warhammer 40,000: Regicide, and Stardock's Galactic Civilizations III. But a big part of this genre is based on history, like the fifth installment of Sega's Total War series, Empire, which has storylines ranging from the Napoleonic Wars, and the colonization and eventual freedom of America from Great Britain, and Koei's Nobunaga's Ambition series, which are all based on history, particularly during Japan's feudal era.
